[edit] About the Dickey Wiki

The Dickey family has been traced back hundreds of years through historical records and family lore. One of the earliest Dickey's on record, if not the earliest, is Robert Dickey of Glasgow, Scotland in 1463. The Dickeys reportedly left Scotland for Ireland later and made their home there for a while. Then they began a migration to other places, especially during the 1700s and 1800s, many of them landing in Canada and the current United States. Family members have periodically made their way into history records for things they've done, both good and bad. Today, Dickey family members are spread across the globe and are found in nearly every walk of life.

The Dickey Wiki was established as a repository for family history, photos, stories and information relating to our extensive family. Many websites have been started to catalog our family history. Some of them are quite good. But few offer the "community" interactivity of a wiki, so the Dickey Wiki was established as an experiment in community family history as much as anything. So, if you are a member of the Dickey family, have Dickey family members or just want to know more about the family, welcome!

[edit] Getting Started

Wikis are a very easy-to-use and flexible system of compiling information. However, there is a slight learning curve for those who haven't used one before. Here are links to information that you may find helpful in getting started.

[edit] Using a Wiki

[edit] About Wikis

Wikis are fun and useful tools for compiling information. They are especially useful for websites that want to allow user-added content and to encourage community participation. Unlike other websites where gatekeepers heavily moderate content using strong enforcement techniques, wikis encourage users to add appropriate content without much regulation. Unfortunately, wikis are susceptible to abuse by spammers and others who don't have the community well-being in mind. So, some moderation and regulation is necessary. But it is our intention to keep regulation to a bare minimum.

Probably the most famous wiki in use is Wikipedia. Over the course of several years, Wikipedia grew a massive encyclopedic database compiled and moderated by thousands of users. The Dickey Wiki uses the same wiki program, MediaWiki, that Wikipedia uses.

[edit] Finding Information on a Wiki

Finding information contained within a wiki is very simple. Just type your search term in the search box in the navigation bar found on the left-hand side of any page. Click "Go" and the database is searched. Any relevant articles will be returned. If no relevant articles are found, the message "No page with that title exists." will be returned...along with an option to create a page for that article if you wish. So, say you search for your grandfather "Buck Benny" and the database finds no pages with that title. You can click "Create this page" and start a page on your grandfather. It's that easy!

[edit] Editing a Wiki Page

If you have corrections or additional information you wish to add to an existing page, it's easy to edit a page. Simply click the "Edit this page" tab at the top of the page. You will be taken to the raw data that makes up that page and you can make changes to the information. When you're finished, click "Save page" to save your changes. If you make a mistake, simply click on "Edit this page" again and make further changes.

For help on how to make links, add images, make bold text and more, check out our cheatsheet.

[edit] Starting a New Wiki Page

As stated above, starting a new wiki page is as simple as searching to make sure the page doesn't already exist. (See "Finding Information on a Wiki" above to find out about searching.) If the page you want to start doesn't exist, simply click on "Create this page" to start the new page.
